I think it was a good move to merge both of these volumes into a single paperback as I would not have been interested enough after The Shadow of the Torturer to pickup The Claw of the Conciliator. Making up in a small way for overlooking The Shadow of the Torturer in 1981, we have The Claw of the Conciliator here. It's still brilliant, but it really doesn't stand alone, so I'm not surprised it didn't win. The four books in the series (Shadow of the Torturer, Claw of the Conciliator, Sword of the Lictor, and Citadel of the Autarch) are written in a first-person narrative style from the trained torturer Severian's point of view. Shadow.and.Claw.The.Shadow.of.the. Shadow & Claw contains the first two: The Shadow of the Torturer and The Claw of the Conciliator, which respectively won the World Fantasy and Nebula Awards. 25th September 2011 by Captain Maybe.
